When it comes to kitchen cabinets, it seems like the options are almost limitless. With so many choices to make, where do you begin? Here's how to make the right choice of kitchen cabinets for your home.

Where to start

Many people, when starting a kitchen remodeling project, want to remodel and give their space a distinctive new style or look. You may even already have a picture in your head, of how you'd like it to look. Other people are just looking to new cabinets to store their things, and don't have a specific look or style in mind.

Either way, it's important to know your choices and options.

Custom cabinets

Custom cabinets for your kitchen offer the greatest flexibility and usually the high construction quality. They are also the more expensive option.

Custom cabinets use high quality construction that is generally more sturdy than semi custom or stock cabinets. With the help of a great designer, custom cabinets are a great option.

Semi custom cabinets

Not quite stock and not quite custom, semi custom cabinetry is a widely used option. They provide a sound cabinet base with many options are sizes. Semiccustom cabinets can last a lifetime, although maybe not as long as custom cabinets. This can be an advantage if you think you'll remodel again in 20 years. By that time, you may be wanting to update the style of your kitchen again anyway.

Stock cabinets

Stock cabinets are the most affordable cabinet option. They are mass produced in specific sizes, but also offer some luxurious features. Stock cabinets are usually available very quickly. The downside is that you may end making some concessions on style and size, depending on the size and shape of your kitchen.

Face frame construction

This traditional style of cabinet construction consists of face frames, or stiles and rails, that cover the front of the cabinet box. They may be used with overlay doors, inset doors and full overlay doors and each style will make a huge difference on the look of your cabinets.

Frameless construction (Euro style)

Some kitchen cabinets are built using frameless construction. There is no face frame and provides a modern clean look.

Door styles

There are a huge number of door styles available, but you'll see popular styles come up, some with differing names for the same type.

The more popular styles are raised panel doors, which have a middle panel that sticks out from the door frame. Recessed panel doors have a middle panel that is set inside the door frame. Flat panel doors are smooth faced.

Your cabinet door style has a huge impact on the look of your cabinets. Simply doors generally convey a more modern look, while more ornate doors create a more traditional style.

Material choice

Considering what stain to finish your cabinets in, is an important choice. Many years ago, the popular choice was oak, and more recently everyone was doing cherry.  Maple is a popular choice today. Any of these finishes may work for you so choose the one you love most. Some cabinet stains show more or less of the underlying wood grain, so be sure to see a sample.

Cabinet finish

Whether you choose a stained finish for your cabinets, or a painted look, keep in mind the final style you'd like for your kitchen. Do you have crown moldings and window casings you'd like to match or contrast with? Would you like to include a glaze to offer a hint of secondary color in the grooves of your kitchen cabinets.
