Question of the day:

There's that little bit of space between your countertop and upper cabinets. Can you save money by painting this area instead of adding a tile or other backsplash?

Answer: Whatever you do, don't use paint or wallpaper for a backsplash. You need a washable surface that can stand up to the regular use your kitchen is going to get. Paint or wallpaper just isn't practical over the long term.  What does work? If it's not too dark, consider extending your countertop material up the wall. Or pick out a coordinating color or pattern to finish off the area. Use specialty tiles for a decorator look.
